Crime Prevention Tips

At Home

  1. Make your home look occupied and make it difficult to break in.
  2. Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed, even if it is for a short time
  3. Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going out for a length of time, consider installing timers on the lights so they will turn off during the day and on at night.
  4. Keep your garage door closed and locked.
  5. Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers, or flyers to build up while you are gone. This is a clear sign to criminals that the homeowner is away. You can make arrangements through the post office or have a friend or neighbor take care of it.
  6. Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are away for a prolonged period of time.
  7. Check the locks on your doors and windows to make sure they function properly and remember that push button locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open. Installing deadbolt locks on outside doors is the safest way to go!

While You're Out

  1. Always carry a purse or bag close to the body with your arm over the flap. If the bag has no flap, avoid using it as a place to put a wallet or credit cards.
  2. When shopping, never leave packages or bags alone.
  3. Packages should be stored in the trunk of the car, not in the front or back seat where they can be seen by thieves.
  4. Carry only the cash and credit cards that are necessary.
  5. Keep money and charge cards in separate places.
  6. If a purse, bag, or wallet is grabbed, be careful not to get involved in a wrestling match. The thief may have a weapon.
  7. While in your vehicle, if someone is driving recklessly, following you, or being obscene, write down the license number and contact police.
  8. Park in a well-lit parking lot nearest to where you are going.
  9. Make sure your car is locked when leaving it.
  10. When returning to your car, have your keys ready so you can enter the vehicle quickly; and be aware of your surroundings. If you have to look for your keys, you are diverting your attention from what's going on around you, making yourself vulnerable to others.
  11. As you approach your car, quickly look underneath. This can be a hiding place.
  12. Before entering your vehicle, make sure all the doors are locked and everything looks as it did when you left. If there is something out of place, disturbed, or someone is in your vehicle, leave quickly and call police.
